The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey

About the Book

CGIS Agent Noah Rowley is on the front of a mass shooting raging on his Coast Guard base. He and his team stop the attack, but not before numerous people were killed. He is determined to do whatever is needed to bring this to justice.

Coast Guard flight medic Brooke Kesler evacuates the scene of the shooting in a helicopter carrying the only surviving gunman. The gunman whispers information to Brooke that paints a target on her.

As Brooke and Noah race to uncover answers, emotions between them ignite. Noah struggles to protect Brooke at all costs and to conceal the secret that prevents him from becoming what he longs to be–the right man for her.

My Thoughts

This book took me on a suspenseful ride from start to finish!  The first chapter has several dead bodies and the action to solve the murders continues until the very last chapter.  There were so many twists and turns I could not predict the final outcome.  I really liked reading about Noah and Brooke; they were able to progress their relationship despite all the fast-paced action.  The secondary story is just as exciting and I’m amazed at how the author manages to develop her characters even with so much mystery going on in the story.  This novel stands well on its own but it is fun to learn more about the team in previous novels.  I really liked the suspense and action in this novel and I highly recommend it to those who want a page turner!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley.  Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Crushing depths

They know the power and peril of the ocean. But as they get closer to the deadly truth…An even greater danger lurks just beneath the surface.

When an accident claims the life of an oil-rig worker on the first drilling platform off the North Carolina coast, Coast Guard investigators Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers are sent to take the case. Tensions surrounding the oil rig are high and the death has everyone on edge. Environmental activists are threatening to do whatever it takes to stop the structure from being completed, while rumors are being whispered about ancient curses surrounding this part of the ocean.

Mounting evidence shows the death may not have been an accident at all. Was he killed by one of the activists or, perhaps more frighteningly, a member of his own crew? Rissi and Mason have to sort through not only a plethora of suspects, but also their own past and attraction to each other.

Just as the case seems like it’ll break open, worse news arrives. A tropical storm has turned their way and soon they’re cut off from any rescue–and right where the killer
wants them. It’s a race to discover his identity before he eliminates the threat they pose.

My Thoughts

And the action continues with the second installment in this exciting suspense series from Dani Pettrey! This book picks up right where the last one left off, so I do recommend that you read the series in order, but this series has been great, so that should be no trial!  I liked Rissi and Mason a lot in the first book and was excited that they took center stage in this second novel.  They share similar painful pasts, which makes their relationship that much better.  I love how the characters are flawed and real.  Like the first book, the story starts with multiple characters, which takes a few chapters to keep straight, but this eventually allows there to be multiple potential villains and the plot less predictable.  I suggest that you make sure your laundry is done and your house is clean before starting this book, because once you start, you will not be able to put it down!  I enjoyed the suspenseful plot.  I definitely recommend this series!

The Crushing Depths book cover

Coast Guard investigators Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers are tasked with finding out why an oil-rig worker died on the drilling platform off the coast of North Carolina.  However, their job is complicated by opinions from environmental activists and those who believe the death is secondary to an ancient curse.  But the most frightening theory of all is that the death may not be from an accident, but from a murder.

More from Dani

Pettrey kicks off her new Coastal Guardians series with an intense blend of suspense, love, and faith. The Killing Tide features romance that’s as thrilling as the action, and faithful characters integrated seamlessly into a complex web of crime.

— Kate Campos BookList

The Killing Tide is the first book in my Coastal Guardian series. My husband was Navy, so why am I writing about the Coast Guard? Because I think their mission to keep our waters and our country safe should be highlighted more. Before I started writing The Killing Tide, I’ll admit I knew little about the Coast Guard. I had a friend in high school who joined the Guard right after graduation, but that’s about the depth of my experience with them. Then, my husband and I watched a movie called The Finest Hour.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly urge you to. It’s the true story of one of the most dangerous and daring rescue attempts in Coast Guard history. Boatswain’s Mate First Class Bernie Webber takes a small team to rescue the crew of the Pendleton T2 oil tanker, which split in half off the coast of Cape Cod during a brutal nor’easter in 1952. I won’t ruin the ending for you, but let’s just say it’s a wonderful testament to courage in adversity. After watching it, I knew I had to write a series about the Coast Guard. I began researching and came across the Coast Guard Investigative Service and my interest was highly peaked. After talking with Coast Guardsmen, both newly in the service and those long retired, I began to see the story weaving together like a movie in my mind. I hope you enjoy reading the CGIS Wilmington teams’ adventures, cases and…of course, romances.

My Thoughts

This book opens with gunshots and action and it continues until the very end!  There is heart pounding danger and suspense that keeps you as a reader on your toes.  I liked the romance sprinkled throughout the story, especially since the characters have a past that make their interactions more interesting.  I was not a big fan of Gabby because I sometimes felt like she went too far for a story.  I liked the other characters a lot, however.  Also, I had a hard time keeping all the characters straight at first, but this improved as the story evolved.  The villain was the perfectly creepy type that you love to hate, and overall, this story was a great read!  I look forward to more in the series!

The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey

The Killing Tide book cover

When investigative reporter Gabby Rowley is almost killed after work one day, her boss encourages her to hide away at her brother’s place.  However, this puts her in close proximity to Coast Guard Investigative Service special agent Finn Walker, a man that she once loved.  Finn is annoyed that Gabby keeps putting her investigative nose into his business.  But as family and friends start going missing, she and Finn must race against the clock to solve the darkness lurking along the coast before it is too late.
